Sectors Of Focus

Agriculture

Three-quarters of the world’s poor live in rural areas and depend largely on farming.ARC works with researchers and implementers to identify ways to increase the productivity of farms to ensure food security, increase farmer income, and promote environmental sustainability. ARC provides technical support to large-scale implementers and governments to inform their program and funding strategies.

Education

About 258 million children and youth are out of school, and more than 617 million children and youth lack basic skills in literacy and numeracy. These interrelated challenges must be addressed in order to realize education’s promise to improve lives, communities, and countries. ARC Education Sector works closely with ministries of education, NGOs, and other actors to support the use of research and data to improve outcomes for children and young people and their education systems and communities.

Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development

Entrepreneurship and firm growth are important engines of inclusive economic growth and social development, providing essential jobs, goods, and services to millions of people worldwide. But the success of entrepreneurs and firms is often limited by barriers in accessing finance, markets, technology, and innovation. ARC Program collaborates with researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to create and share rigorous evidence that can help inform decision-making in the sector.

Financial Inclusion

Across developing and advanced economies alike, low-income households need effective and affordable tools to save and borrow money, make and receive payments, and manage risk. ARC Financial Inclusion Program works with financial service providers, policymakers, and investors to design and test financial products, foster enabling environments for innovation, and protect consumers against risk.

Social Protection

ARC’s Social Protection Program partners with governments and other implementers working to move households out of extreme poverty by creating economic opportunities for the poor. ARC has a growing body of research on identifying and scaling effective social protection programs, including cash transfers, graduation programs, and job training.

Refugee Displacement, Peace & Recovery

Most of the world’s poor live in fragile states, yet rigorous evidence on how to build peace and stability in conflict- and crisis-affected contexts is still limited. ARC’s Peace & Recovery Program (P&R) aims to improve outcomes for conflict- and crisis-affected populations by building the evidence base on reducing violence and fragility, promoting peace, and preventing, coping with, and recovering from crises.
